The Rainbow Valley is located in the Domeyko Mountain, at 3200 meters above sea level, 60 kilometers away from San Pedro de Atacama, in the Atacama Desert, in Chile.
Domeyko mountain located to the west of the Atacama Salt Flat (Salar de Atacama). Runs from north to south for approximately 600 kms. The ridge marks the eastern boundary of the Atacama Desert.
Domeyko mountain was named after Ignacio Domeyko mountains and is the mountain with less humidity in the world.
The Valley is called “Rainbow” thanks to the variety of colors that can be seen in the hills. These colors are due to the large presence of minerals that have come to the surface. It was formed by tectonic movements and volcanic activity of millions of years.
The tour begins with a visit to the principal area of the Rainbow Valley, followed by the 2 hours trek described here.
Trekking time: 2 hours aprox.
Trekking distance: 7 kms. aprox.
Necessary gear: Warm clothe (gloves, hat, polar jacket, windbreaker, etc), sunglasses, sun protection, trekking boot y trekking canes.
Tips: Take a light breakfast in the morning. Energy food and sufficient water should be taken for the walk.
Approximately expedition time: From 8AM (departure from San Pedro de Atacama) until around 2PM (arrival to San Pedro de Atacama)
– Private transportation (4×4 vehicle).
– Guided trekking (english/spanish).
– A snack during the walk (lunch time).
– Gear and clothe the traveler may not have.
