Machuca and Rio Grande are two emblematic Atacama villages near San Pedro de Atacama, region of Antofagasta, Chile.
Machuca is located approximately 60 kilometers away from San Pedro de Atacama, at an altitude of 4000 meters. Its people’s main activity is Llamas grazing, added to an emerging tourism service for the large number of visitors who come each year, Nowadays Machuca has an accommodation and is offering some crafts.
Rio Grande is located approximately 90 kilometers away from San Pedro de Atacama, at an altitude of 3200 meters. It is characterized by its armed dwellings with walls of carved stones joined with mud, thatch and mud with wooden beams cactus and Algarrobos.
The walk takes place between Machuca (wetlands) and Rio Grande. During the trip, a pastourage route is follows along the river, passing through old sites of human settlements, surrounded by a beautiful flora and Atacama wildlife.
It is a relaxing and beautiful trek, which allows travelers to have a unique appreciation of the routes of shepherds and hidden places of the Chilean Altiplano.
Trekking time: 5 hours aprox.
Trekking distance: 13 kms. aprox.
Necessary gear: Warm clothe (gloves, hat, polar jacket, windbreaker, etc), sunglasses, sun protection, trekking boot y trekking canes.
Tips: Take a light breakfast in the morning. Energy food and sufficient water should be taken for the walk.
Approximately expedition time: From 8AM (departure from San Pedro de Atacama) until around 4PM (arrival to San Pedro de Atacama)
