ALTIPLANIC LAGOONS

Miscanti and Miñiques are two lagoons located 115 kms. southeast from San Pedro de Atacama (25 kms. away from Socaire) in the Andes Mountains, Atacama Desert, northern Chile.

Miscanti and Miñiques are the named “Altiplanic Lagoons”.

The lagoons are located at an altitude of 4200 meters above sea level, inside the Los Flamencos National Reserve. They are managed by the Atacama Community of Socaire in partnership with the National Forestry Corporation. The Miscanti hill and the Miñiques volcano rises above the lagoons. A lava flow from an eruption of Miñiques separates the two lakes. The Miñiques volcano is considered extinct; It is thought that it most active period was from the Pliocene to the Holocene.

The regular fauna of this sector has birds species such as the “tagua cornuda”, “chilean” flamingo, the “juarjual y jergón” ducks, the “andina” seagull, the “chirigüe verdoso”, the “minero de la puna o aguilucho”; 69 species in total. Mammals are also present with 18 species, the most common are the vicuña, guanaco, vizcacha and red fox.

It is a must-see destination for all travelers arriving in San Pedro de Atacama.
