The Chaxa lagoon Park is approximately 7 kms. away from Toconao, and about 50 kms. south of San Pedro de Atacama, in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile. It is within the Wilderness Protection System of CONAF, being part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. It is located in a central point of the Atacama Salt Flat, at 2.300 meters above sea level.
It is a privileged place to see flamingos. Three types might be seen: the “Parina Grande”, “Parina Chica” and the chilean flamingo.
It is a shallow lagoon, where they proliferate microscopic living beings (microinvertebrates), that serves as food of flamingos and other birds transiting the Chaxa Lagoon Park.
It is a place made up of ancient water and geomorphological processes where salt basin receives water from the Andes, which are evaporated by the effect of the sun being a supernatural landscape of salt crusts.
